Police Arrest 5 at Gunpoint in Car Reported Stolen

Piedmont police arrested a 19-year-old Oakland woman and four teen juveniles in a Ford Crown Victoria that police said had been stolen in Oakland. The woman began resisting in a patrol car and had to be placed under extra restraint, police said.

Piedmont Police Officer Steve DeWarns became suspicious at 5:30 p.m. Saturday when the occupants of a white 1994 Crown Victoria saw him and suddenly pulled over at Nova Drive and Magnolia Avenue.

The five people immediately got out of the car, which a quick check revealed as having been stolen in Oakland, said Police Captain Scott Wyatt.

The five people began coming toward DeWarns, who drew his gun, Wyatt said.

"That would be normal procedure," Wyatt said, referring to stopping people caught in a stolen car. "I would definitely put them at gunpoint."

Other officers converged on the scene, and a black BB gun that looked like a real Luger was found on the floor of the rear seat, Wyatt said.

All five were arrested, Wyatt said. They included a 19-year-old woman from Oakland and four teen juveniles – a 14-year-old male from Oakland, a 15-year-old male from Sacramento, a 15-year-old female from Oakland and 16-year-old female from Oakland.

The woman became "resistive" after being placed in a patrol car and repeatedly banged her head against the plexiglass partition inside the vehicle while also yelling, screaming and spitting, Wyatt said. Fire Department personnel were summoned to supply special restraint straps to hold her, he said.

All five were arrested on suspicion of auto theft, he said. The two male juveniles were arrested also on suspicion of violation of probation, he said.

The woman was taken to the Glenn Dyer Detention Facility in Oakland and the others to Juvenile Hall, he said.

Assisting in the arrests were Police Sgt. Mike Munoz and Officers David Cutler, Kristina Foster and Willie Wright, Wyatt said.
