'The Waiting Room' Shortlisted for Oscars

The documentary by Piedmont filmmaker Peter Nicks moves into the next round of voting for the 2013 Academy Awards.

The Waiting Room, a feature-length documentary filmed at Oakland's Highland Hospital, is among 15 films that will advance in the voting process for the 85th Academy Awards, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced Monday. A total of 126 pictures originally qualified in the category, the Academy's announcement said.

The director-producer is Peter Nicks, a Piedmont resident and Emmy Award-winning filmmaker, who gave local residents an early look at the film last July with a free screening at Piedmont Community Church.

The Waiting Room was also recently nominated for an Independent Spirit Award in the best documentary category.
