Piedmont in Bloom: Himalayan Dogwood at City Hall

This flowering tree, which is putting on a spectacular display at the entrance to Piedmont's City Hall right now, is a Himalayan Evergreen Dogwood, according to the city's Public Works Department.

It's a native of Bhutan and other parts of the Himalayas.

For gardeners who may want to add it to their collections, it's formally Cornus capitata "Mountain Moon."

A note on Berkeley Horticultural Nursery's website, says the Himalayan dogwood is well suited to coastal California gardens, where it grows 15 to 20 feet high and is usually evergreen. The late spring blooms are followed by strawberry-like red fruit.
