Piedmont Revs Up for Fourth of July

What child could pass up a "hot chocolate float" at the traditional Independence Day pancake breakfast?

Groups of chairs — some roped to trees — already line Highland Avenue as Piedmont gears up for its annual Fourth of July celebration on Thursday.

The day will begin with the traditional pancake breakfast at the Veterans Memorial Building, 401 Highland Ave., from 7 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. No reservations are needed.

The menu will include pancakes, sausage, fruit, coffee and "hot chocolate floats."

The cost is $8 for adults, $5 for children, payable at the door.

The breakfast, hosted for the last several years by the Piedmont Montclair Rotary Club, is being put on this year by the city's Recreation Department.

The parade will begin at 11 a.m. at Highland Avenue and Park Way and end at Piedmont Park, where festivities will continue throughout the afternoon. A concert in the park will begin about 12:30 p.m.

Piedmont's new Police Chief Rikki Goede and just-appointed Fire Chief Warren "Bud" McLaren will be appearing in the parade this year. City Councilmember Garrett Keating is also scheduled to take part.
