Top Stories, Aug. 21-27: Quakes; Fresh Food; Empty Nesters

Some ground shaking, possibilities for new shopping options in Montclair, and a fund-raising campaign aimed at parents who's kids have all graduated made news in Piedmont in the past week.

  1. : Less than six hours after a 5.8-magnitude tumbler surprised the East Coast, the East Bay got a little shake of its own Tuesday. The 3.6-magnitude earthquake felt by hundreds in the zipcodes Piedmont shares with Oakland, was followed by half a dozen smaller aftershocks.
  2. : The Montclair Village Association polled patrons about what they would want to see go into several storefronts lying vacant in the business district north of Piedmont. Fresh food options dominated the wishlist. 
  3. : School fund-raiser and organizer extraordinarie, Andrea Swenson, is launching a new campaign to keep parents in the loop after their kids—like hers—have flown the coop.
  4. : Classes started at Piedmont schools Wednesday with students showing off their new threads. For girls, pink tights are in. For boys, casual t-shirts are still the way to go.
  5. : Five principals in 12 years is a lot of turnover for a school in Piedmont. Ting Hsu Engelman stepped up to lead Millennium High School after Karen Gnusti, who had been principal only since 2009, announced suddenly in the middle of the summer that she'd be leaving. Students and teachers are hopeful Engelman will have a long tenure.
