Some were stopped in their tracks by a story of a Friday night robbery that left one coffeehouse customer wounded. There was also a whole lot of voting in the past week in polls about Blair Park financing and Safeway upgrades.

  1. : A gun went off late Friday night when customers at the popular coffeehouse tried to stop robbers in what was perhaps the most brazen in a string of recent on Piedmont Avenue. Gaylord's was again Saturday morning.
  2. : A proposal to require funds to cover maintenance of planned playing fields for 10 years be put in escrow before ground is broken drew vocifierous objections from the project's backers. A vast majority in a responded that some guarantee regarding financing for the development of Blair Park would be critical to their municipal services tax vote.
  3. : In hopes of capturing more customers in the saturated Piedmont area market, the grocery chain is planning to expand its two Rockridge stores and has already remodeled a third in Montclair with a more upscale appearance and gourmet fare. A majority in a responded that the changes would prompt them to shop at Safeway more often.
  4. : More burglaries, larcenies and motor vehicle thefts added up to a 51 percent overall increase in crimes indexed by the FBI. City Council members pressed Police Chief John Hunt to get more crime alerts out to the community and take action to stem the tide.
  5. : Karen Sokal's grandmother delivered babies of women whom she had delivered. Now Sokal's work focuses on the health of young children and families in Latin America, Asia and immigrant communities in the U.S.
