Arts Center Opens With Diverse Offerings

Works by six artists in a variety of mediums are up in the gallery at the new Piedmont Center for the Arts. Plans for more are in the works.

The Piedmont Center For the Arts (PCA) , Sunday, Aug. 28, and already its caused the art exhibited in Piedmont to multiply.

Three visual artists, Valerie Corvin, Bruce Wolfe, and Lorna Strotz—all members of the PCA’s Board of Directors or Advisory Board—each asked another colleague to display their artwork at the grand opening.

“I paint, and I asked an old friend who is a photographer, so we would get an assortment,” Corvin explained. “Right away, we were able to think of six different kinds of mediums that represent a variety.”

Not only will the visual art at the opening be diverse, but so will the future programming being planned for the new venue. Corvin is volunteering as the center’s first program director and is forming separate advisory panels for visual, literary, and performing arts. The panels will be charged with reaching out to the community for programming recommendations.

“We’re looking to make as many connections with people in the area as possible,” Corvin said.

Already, PCA has had conversations with PAINTS, a non-profit organization that supports the arts in Piedmont schools.

“We will have a regular display area for children’s art and will make the larger space available for their student art shows."

Professional local artists and musicians have come forward and asked to have  shows, much to the delight of Nancy Lehrkind, president of the PCA board.

“We want it to be like the Sunset Center in Carmel,” Lehrkind said. “Although our wish is that all the concerts will be at a very modest cost.”

For now, gallery hours are by appointment. Corvin said she is working to put together a group of volunteer gallery attendants, so the gallery can stay open two afternoons each week, from noon to 3:00 p.m.

A list of upcoming events has been posted on the PCA website. Corvin asked that Piedmont residents and art lovers from across the Bay area email info@piedmontcenterforthearts.org with suggestions for more.

“I really want to hear from everyone,” she claimed, “that’s who this center is for.”
