Hear About Juvenile Justice, Enjoy Les Miz, Hear Jazz at the Chimes

This weekend is all about staying close to home, but not missing a thing. So much to do, all within a couple of miles!

Learn what may be changing in Alameda County's philosophy on juvenile justice, then see juveniles perform a musical with justice as a theme. Start off Saturday by kicking your writing into gear, then find some new treasures and listen to jazz.


  • Where/When:
    Youth UpRising, 8711 MacArthur Blvd., Oakland. Thursday, 5:30-7:30 p.m.
    Why Go: Muhammad is the new chief probation officer for Alameda County and will discuss new strategies for the juvenile justice system. Having gone through that very system as a youth, he knows better than anybody what the issues are, and what solutions might be possible.

  • Where/When:
    (PHS), , 7:30 p.m., , 8 p.m.
    Why Go: See Piedmont High School's take on this powerful musical, with the gorgeous score performed by the PHS Orchestra and a cast of talented young actors playing the roles of Jean Valjean, Cosette, Marius and the rest of the unforgettable characters.
    Pricing: $11 for students/seniors 65+ and $17 for adults

    , 5366 College Ave., Oakland. Saturday, 1-5 p.m.
    Why Go: Come by, bring whatever writing or ideas you have, discuss it with others and get feedback from fellow writers. This monthly workshop happens the third Saturday of each month.

  • Where/When:
    , 400 Highland Ave., Piedmont. Saturday and Sunday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
    Why Go: Rummage through unique donated items to find your treasure. Most anything except clothing my be found here. The sale benefits student mission trips to Mexico and African countries.

    , 4499 Piedmont Ave., Oakland. Saturday and Sunday, 2-4 p.m.
    Why Go: The third weekend of each month, you can hear jazz performed at the Chapel of the Chimes. According to a Yelp review, Joni Mitchell jazz has been heard here, so you can expect an interesting performance. The building itself is an architectural treasure designed by Julia Morgan.
    Pricing: $20, adults; free for children under 12
