Oakland, CA – On Thursday April 7, 2011, Oakland Elizabeth House will host its eighth Annual Benefit Luncheon and Live Auction at the Claremont Country Club to raise funds for transitional services that support women and children in times of need.

Each year the event features a female guest speaker with a story of strength and commitment to share. This year the event welcomes award-winning journalist and author Belva Davis. As the first African American female TV journalist in the West, Davis helped change the face and focus of TV news. She shares the story of her extraordinary life in her spellbinding new memoir, “Never in My Wildest Dreams” (February 2011).

It has been an amazing odyssey for Davis, who was born to a 15-year-old Louisiana laundress during the Great Depression, raised in the crowded projects of Oakland, confronted by racism and abuse, and achieved a career beyond her imagination. She has won eight local Emmys and a number of Lifetime Achievement Awards, including honors from the International Women’s Media Foundation, the National Association of Black Journalists and the Northern California chapter of the National Association of Television Arts and Sciences, and is profiled in the Newseum in Washington, D.C. Davis continues to host a weekly news roundtable and special reports on KQED.

With the mission of creating, nurturing, and maintaining a cooperative living environment of hospitality and respect, Oakland Elizabeth House is proud to welcome Belva Davis to the 2011 fundraiser, as an outstanding role model for women of all ages.

The Oakland Elizabeth House Benefit Luncheon & Live Auction will take place April 7, 2011, at the Claremont Country Club, 5295 Broadway Terrace, Oakland, Calif., starting with a Reception and Boutique 10:30 a.m. to noon, immediately followed by Lunch and Live Auction. Tickets are $65, and can be purchased at www.oakehouse.org.
