Gypsy Jazz Today at Chapel of the Chimes

Le Jazz Hot celebrates the music of Django Reinhardt

Jazz at the Chimes’ second concert of the new season will feature Le Jazz Hot, the quartet of the Hot Club of San Francisco, on Sunday, March 18, at 2 p.m. at , 4499 Piedmont Ave., Oakland.

Le Jazz Hot is an ensemble of versatile musicians celebrating the music — often called gypsy jazz — of Django Reinhardt’s pioneering Hot Club de France. The ensemble borrows the all-string instrumentation of violin, bass and guitars from the original Hot Club, but breathes new life into the music with innovative arrangements of classic tunes and original compositions from the group’s lead guitarist Paul Mehling.

Hearing the ensemble live, or on any of their eleven albums, carries the listener back to the 1930s and to the small, smoky jazz clubs of Paris or the refined lounges of the famous Hotel Ritz. Often called gypsy jazz,

The concert will be followed by a reception where the public can meet the artists and purchase CDs. 

Tickets: $15 general, $10 seniors and students. Purchase at the door, cash only. The box office opens at 12:30 pm. Doors open at 1:30. Limited seating; arrive early to purchase tickets.
