Weekend Things: A Cappella Singing, Garden Rambling, and Artist Studios

Singing by Piedmont High students, gardening by Piedmont's eco-conscious, and works by local artists are on the weekend activity agenda.

FRIDAY


This year's high school a capella revue, “Come Fly With Me”, pays tribute to Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Sammy Davis Jr. and others greats with classics like Satin Doll, Fly Me to the Moon and Beyond the Sea. The Saturday performance will be followed by a gala at the home of Andrea and Paul Swenson.

When: Friday, June 3 and Saturday, June 4 at 8 p.m., Sunday, June 5 at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

SATURDAY


Organized by the community's grassroots environmental group, Piedmont Connect, the 2011 Green Garden Ramble offers a chance to see how you can create a garden that's sustainable, beautiful, edible and drought resistant. The eight stops on the self-guided tour include Havens Elementary School's new edible garden and butterfly habitat.

Tessera Gallery is hosting "Art in Harmony", the third annual benefit for Oakland East Bay Symphony's music education and outreach programs. The event includes musical performances, silent and live auctions, and refreshments catered by Amiee Alan. VIPs get to go to a pre-event reception with symphony music director Michael Morgan and special guests.

It's another monthly installment of the free Introduction to Genealogy class where you can get started on finding out your family history. The class will be taught by Kim Cotton and participants will have full use of Northern California's premier genealogy society library.

SUNDAY


“Art and Music in the Gardens” brings together Oakland’s vibrant art and gardening communities in a signature event hosted in the multi-acre Gardens at Lake Merritt and Lakeside Park Garden Center. There will be garden demonstrations and an art show along with music and poetry performances.
Where: Bandstand at the Lake Merritt Gardens, 666 Bellevue Ave, Oakland
When: Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
How much: Free


This and next weekend you'll have a chance to see the work of local artists at the place where it is created – in their studios. Many artists in the Piedmont area will open up their work spaces to show off painting, drawing, ceramics, metalwork and other creations for the Pro Arts East Bay Open Studios.
