Weekend Things: Volunteer Opportunities, Theatrical Classics, and a Family Bike Ride

'National Velvet' and 'Oliver!' are playing near Piedmont and community service crews are tending to roses and feeding seniors this weekend.

FRIDAY, JULY 8


Kids, and kids at heart, have a chance to get up close and personal with rare rain forest animals that the library has invited over for the afternoon.

Every month the Paramount Theatre presents classic movies the way they were meant to be seen—on the big screen in a beautiful theater. This month it's the 1944 film National Velvet, which put 12-year-old Elizabeth Taylor on the road to stardom.

Oliver! has been pleasing audiences all over the world since 1960 and this summer it comes to Woodminster. Go see it and you'll be singing along to “Where is Love” and “It's a Fine Life” in no time.

The Friends of the Morcom Rose Garden in Oakland hold a monthly work party at the rose garden. Not only will you help keep the garden beautiful, you'll learn rose gardening skills such as deadheading.
