Piedmont Ave. Pet Food Express to Open Nov. 19

Pet Food Express is counting down the days — and even the seconds — until the scheduled opening of its new store on Piedmont Avenue on Nov. 19.

It will be the newest outlet for the Oakland-based chain, which has about 50 stores in Northern California.

The new store, at 3868 Piedmont Ave., Oakland, occupies a building that once housed a Blockbuster Video outlet. An earlier proposal for a BevMo store at the site was derailed last year when it met with strong opposition from neighborhood and merchant groups.

According to the Pet Food Express website, the new store will offer some of the popular extras available at other outlets: a self-service pet wash ($15, or four for $11.25 each) and a community veterinary clinic (with the first one planned for Sunday, Nov. 24, 4-6:30 p.m.). Dog training classes with Bravo Pup will begin in January.

The stores sell a wide variety of pet foods and supplies, including organic options, but no live animals. The chain has drawn attention for its cooperation with pet adoption agencies, hosting frequent adoption events at its stores.

Other Pet Food Express stores nearby are located in the Rockridge Shopping Center at Broadway and 51st Street/Pleasant Valley Road and at 2220 Mountain Blvd., in Montclair Village.
