Romantic Restaurants for Valentine's Day

Several nearby restaurants are offering special Valentine's Day menus. Early reservations are strongly advised. Local food purveyors are also offering specials and suggestions for those who want to cuddle up at home.

Valentine's Day and romantic love? Valentine's Day and flowers? Valentine's Day and candy? These traditions all date back to the Middle Ages, according to Wikipedia, so you're following in historical footsteps if you celebrate Feb. 14 with a bouquet of roses, a box of chocolates — or a special dinner out with your sweetheart.

Bay Wolf, 3853 Piedmont Ave., Oakland, was named the most romantic local restaurant by Piedmont Patch readers in 2012. For Valentine's Day this year, Bay Wolf is offering a prix fixe dinner for $68 per person that includes a choice of entrees and, for dessert, a choice of very appropriate melting heart chocolate cake or passionfruit-banana parfait.

Bellanico, 4238 Park Blvd., Oakland, will offer a four-course prix fixe dinner for $65 per person, with an optional wine pairing.

Camino, 3917 Grand Ave., Oakland, also has a prix fixe menu for Valentine's Day, at $80 per person.

Mezze, 3407 Lakeshore Ave., Oakland, will have an $80 per person prix fixe dinner ($70 per person for reservations before 6:30 p.m.) with a choice of entrees and a complimentary sparkling wine toast.

Plum, 2214 Broadway Oakland, will have a four-course Valentine's Day menu with options at $70 per person.

No babysitter available? Piedmont Grocery, 4038 Piedmont Ave., Oakland, has suggestions for fixing your own romantic meal at home. Check out their Valentine's Day shopping list here

At Rockridge Market Hall, 5655 College Ave., Oakland, the Hapaku Fish Shop has a Valentine's Day special with two 1.5-pound lobsters (live or cooked) and caviar for $100, or a choice of oysters ($1.50 each unshucked, $2 shucked) and a half-pint of mignonette sauce for $3.99.

Bittersweet Cafe, 5527 College Ave., is showing some mouthwatering previews of its Valentine Day's candy offerings on the cafe's Facebook page.

Love will even be in the air midday, with a free Feb. 14 concert from noon to 1 p.m. at Oakland City Center, featuring the romantic sounds  of NaJe.
