I Didn't Duck and Cover

When an earthquake hits, I seem to forget everything I've been taught about how to stay safe.

My friends and I look at each other and laugh. Our English teacher had gotten through her lesson quicker than expected, so we got to sit and talk in the library for the remainder of class.

All of a sudden the floor beneath us shakes. We all stay seated, looking around without knowing what to do. As soon as the is over we realize we should have gone under the desks.

We've prepared for what to if an earthquake strikes when we are in our classrooms. But what if we are in the gym? Or the hallway, at our lockers? Or in the library? Or in the bathroom? What should we do then? I guess outside of the classroom we have to decide what to do on our own.

I'm relaxing on my couch at home after finishing my homework when yet again, the ground begins to shake.

I look at the table in front of me, but it’s too small to fit under. Then I run to the piano, but it has wheels so it could roll onto me. I run to the door frame, but by the quaking has already stopped.
