A Fitness Connection

To stay connected to my daughter who's just gone off to college, I've picked up a new exercise regime.

At the end of summer, the inevitable was suddenly upon me after an agonizing year of knowing that my daughter—my oldest—would be going away to college.

It was Aug. 24, when we said good-bye and walked away, leaving Bianca in her dorm at the University of Colorado, Boulder. In order for me to snap out of it, I had to come up with creative ways to stay connected even though we are so far apart.

I thought we could do things in tandem. We could shop together—I mean, we have cameras on our cell phones. Oftentimes, I have called her in the library and she’ll text back telling me why she can’t talk (it’s comforting to know she's making good choices).

Then she texted me one day after taking a yoga class, “I loved it, it felt as if I have just had a facial and a massage”. It made me feel happy that she felt so good. So, now, it was my turn.

I began with Jazzercise at the Piedmont Veteran’s Hall. It is quite a friendly group and the music makes it easy to jump right in. Lisa Peters, one of the instructors and a Piedmont resident, has been teaching for over eight years—she always has a big smile on her face. And the class is conveniently right across the street from my real estate office, Highland Partners.

Next I tried out the Dailey Method on Piedmont Avenue. Owner, and another local Piedmonter, Susan Willrich, offers a truly amazing workout. Within a few weeks (maybe eight classes into it) I can already notice a change in my body. I can say I am addicted, but the class is not a social occasion. Women arrive, faces filled with determination, their bodies clearly as strong as their will. I have never been in so much pain, literally, as I was after the first class, but I returned the next day to do it again.

Now it’s Thanksgiving Break and Bianca is coming home!
