Caltrans Reopens Caldecott's Center Bore

An equipment malfunction slowed the change from westbound to eastbound traffic in the center bore, and traffic backed up on Highway 24, Caltrans officials said.

Bay City News Service—Motorists traveling east through the Caldecott Tunnel this afternoon found themselves in a traffic jam because of a delay in reversing traffic in the tunnel's center bore.

Caltrans changes the direction of traffic in the center bore depending on traffic flow on state Highway 24, relying largely upon an automated system.

However, this afternoon Caltrans said technical difficulties slowed the center bore's transition from westbound to eastbound. A Caltrans spokesman said a compressor associated with the automated system malfunctioned, requiring Caltrans crews to carry out the switchover manually.
