Each week, we’ll tell you about one "great escape" offering you a much deserved break.
The first getaway was suggested by , a wonderful photographer with Albany Patch. She got the chance to stay at the East Brother Light Station Bed & Breakfast and came back raving about the beauty of the area and the comfort of the inn. Located just east of the San Rafael Bridge in Richmond, the inn is, as Dorothy puts it, “A few miles away and in another world.”
Standing tall on an island between San Francisco and San Pablo Bays, this fully restored lighthouse has been in operation for over 133 years, doubling as an inn for the past 26 years as a way for the owners to keep this beautiful Victorian maintained.
Prices for a one-night stay start at $300, which includes the boat ride to and from the island, a four-course dinner, wine and champagne, tours of the lighthouse and the island, and a full breakfast in the morning. Although this might be a splurge, keep in mind that funds from guest stays go to a non-profit dedicated to ongoing repairs of the building and maintenance of the island.
Take a look at the East Brother Light Station website, and if you get the chance to visit, please share some stories about your stay. Also, make sure to check out Dorothy Brown's blog for even more photos and her take on this gem.
Enjoy your escape!
