Earthquake and Aftershock on Day of ShakeOut Drill

A pair of authentic shakers jangle Piedmont.

Only a few hours after a temblor rattled nerves in Piedmont, an aftershock struck the East Bay Thursday at 8:16 p.m.

The U.S. Geological survey reported that the 3.8-magnitude earthquake's epicenter was near California Memorial Stadium in Berkeley, just blocks from the epicenter of the 4.0-magnitude quake that hit the area earlier in the day.

The first quake, which struck at 2:41 p.m., followed the Great California ShakeOut, a statewide disaster drill that had students in Piedmont ducking under their desks Thursday morning.

The USGS located the epicenter of the first quake near the main entrance of UC Berkeley's Clark Kerr Campus, about 3 miles northwest of Piedmont, and 6.1 miles down.

As of 5 p.m., more than 15,000 people had reported feeling the first temblor from Berkeley to Irvine, including about 500 from the zip codes Piedmont shares with Oakland.
