First City Council, School Board Hopefuls Pick Up Nomination Papers

A half dozen people had taken out nomination papers for Piedmont city council and school board seats by noon today (Wednesday), City Clerk John Tulloch said.

Picking up the paperwork for city council seats were Teddy KingTim Rood and incumbent Jeff Wieler, who had all announced their potential candidacy earlier.

Nomination papers for school board seats were issued to Jon Elliott, Doug Ireland and Hari Titan.

Elliott, who ran unsuccessfully for a board seat in 2012, has been an active volunteer on a range of school councils and committees, including a stint as chair of the School Parcel Tax Citizens Advisory Committee (CAC).

Ireland was co-chair of the successful campaign for Measure A, the Piedmont Unified School District parcel tax measure passed by voters last spring.

Titan, a data scientist, heads the consulting firm Next Millennium Technology Corp. He's a member of the Havens Parents Club and has volunteered with Junior Statesmen of America at the regional level.

Amal Smith, who announced last month that she would seek a school board seat, had not yet picked up papers.

The official filing period for candidates for the Piedmont City Council and the Piedmont Unified School District's Board of Education opened Monday. The deadline for filing the nomination forms is Nov. 8, 2013.

The municipal election will be held Feb. 4, 2014.

Three council seats are up for grabs in the coming election, as Mayor John Chiang and Councilmember Garrett Keating will "term out" after two four-year terms and Jeff Wieler completes a four-year term.

Piedmont residents will also be electing two people to the Piedmont Unified School District Board of Education.

Incumbents Ray Gadbois and Roy (E. Leroy) Tolles will both complete their second four-year terms in March of 2014 and are not eligible for reelection.
