Art Exhibition Opening: Check Your Head/Street View/The Maurice Stradford Free Bookstore

In the Galleries at NIAD Art Center: Join us for lots of terrific art, free books and zines, foodtrucks and more. You know it’s gonna be a great time!

On view:

Check Your Head (Main Gallery) -  Following in the painterly footsteps firmly established by the first generation of Bay Area Figurative painters, NIAD’s artists have found numerous ways to re-invigorate the tradition. Featured in the show will be work from Billy White, Eddie Braught, Erica Martinez, Heather Edgar, Shirley How, Kevin Randolph, Julio Del Rio and Jonathan Valdivias.

Street View: Recent Sculptures From Kathleen King (Annex Space) - East Bay artist Kathleen King’s painted constructions begin with scraps of wood found in streets, building sites, and dumpsters. The artist creates an abstract vocabulary with spray-painted markings, gradated color, and blunt geometry that explores the relationships between the urban environment and the emotions and behavior of its inhabitants.

The Maurice Stradford Free Bookstore (Storefront) - The newly re-vamped The Maurice Stradford Free Bookstore will offer loads of great contemporary lit and artist zines from around the country. That’s right, free. Take as much as you want. And because we owe Maurice one for the signs, we’re going to put up a mini-retrospective of his colorful pencil drawings of city buses as well.
