Havens Students Support Children's Hospital Oakland

If you’ve often wanted to give back to your community, and get your kids involved too, but weren’t sure where to start, please consider your very own Havens Community Service Crew

Last Tuesday, right after school, we held our first weekday activity, and it was a huge success! There were more kids and adults than anticipated, and the whole room was abuzz with excitement.

The community service activity focused on Children’s Hospital Oakland, and the needs of the children under their care. Student volunteers kindergarten through fifth grade put together craft bags and bracelet making kits, as well as decorated placemats and bookmarks, to bring cheer and fun activities to all.

While walking around the room, one could not be more inspired, as everyone excitedly assembled goodie bags, and made incredible art, with beautiful messages such as, “You’re never alone”, and “Feel better soon”.  I know I speak for many when I say it felt great to do something positive and nurturing for the kids at Children’s Hospital Oakland

Havens Community Service Crew will be continuing to offer a weekday activity the first Tuesday of every month in the Art Room (room 315). The next project will be on Tuesday, October 1 benefitting Bay Area Children’s Theater.

Every month, students in various classes will also sponsor a weekend activity. The second graders will be sponsoring California Coastal Cleanup day with the Golden Gate Audubon Society on Saturday, September 21 from 9-12 at the Martin Luther King, JR Shoreline in Oakland. Look for more information on this blog and in Havens Highlights.

Throughout the year we will continue with these projects and many others, benefitting Building Opportunities for Self Sufficiency (BOSS, a homeless shelter), East Bay Agency for Children, Bay Area Children’s Theatre, East Bay Regional Parks, Children’s Hospital Oakland, and more.

For information on how to get involved, email havenscrew@gmail.com. Or come to our next meeting on October 15 at 7:30pm at 359 El Cerrito Avenue.  We hope to see you soon at one of our upcoming events, and we welcome you to join in the spirit!
