HPC President praises our Crew

Jenny Lynn, President of Havens Parents Club, wrote about Havens Community Service Crew in her segment of the school newsletter. Her article is reprinted here with her permission:

I hope everyone had a fabulous Thanksgiving Break. We had lots of family in town and had time for lots of local adventures. One outing was to see the play Frog and Toad at the Freight Salvage in Berkeley. It was a fantastic interpretation of the Frog and Toad children’s series. I highly recommend it. However, I am not writing this to plug The Bay Area Children’s Theater performances, but to plug our very own Havens Community Service Crew.

In October, my girls signed up for the monthly volunteer activity through the Havens Community Service Crew. They helped to punch holes and string elastic for theater seating. The girls loved helping and had a great sense of accomplishment. Their volunteer work even made it into our dinner conversation that night as one of the day’s highlights.

It’s now seven weeks later and we’re trying to find our seats for Frog and Toad, and we’re all looking for D47D50. The children are reading laminated signs with elastic securing them to the back of the chairs. The girls immediately recognized their handiwork and could hardly contain themselves. Sounds of glee came pouring from their mouths (thank goodness we arrived a little early and not during the show). “Mama, we made those signs. Mama, I think I even made D47.” They were so proud and that sense of accomplishment carried them throughout the performance. I’m sure the families sitting next to us were less impressed with their frequent exclamations of pride, but I was thankful that the Havens Community Service Crew provides these opportunities for our children.

So, look for January’s volunteer activity and sign up with your children. It’s a great way to start the New Year and might a great New Year’s resolution.
