Tell Us: How Safe Do You Feel Along the Ohlone Greenway?

Yesterday's shooting where two teenage boys were shot by two other other teenagers on the BART path has left many worried. Are you concerned now about using the greenway?

A shooting that occurred on the BART path, also known as the Ohlone Greenway, near the El Cerrito Library Wednesday afternoon has left many readers concerned about traveling between Stockton and Lincoln avenues.

Two teen-aged males, believed to be high school students, were shot by two other other teenage males shortly before 2 p.m. today, Wednesday, according to El Cerrito police.

Both El Cerrito High School and Fairmont Elementary School were placed on temporary lockdown. Stockton Avenue also was closed for several hours at the BART path and didn't reopen until around 7 p.m. according to a reader.

The two suspects involved in the shooting escaped, going east on Stockton, police said. They were described as teenaged African-American males in dark clothing.

In light of the incident, readers have left the following responses:

"Ah yes, the oh-so-lonely greenway. Avoid at all costs," one reader commented.

"EC is new east Oakland," another said.

We want to hear from you...

How do you feel after this incident?

Do you think Ohlone Greenway is less safe to travel on now?

If so, what are alternate routes you plan to take?

Never felt unsafe anywhere. I go to all the local green spaces and parks with my two dogs. This includes many parks in Richmond. There was one in San Pablo though......

I agree. Use it more and send out good community feelings.

I use the greenway a lot but I don't always feel safe on certain stretches of it. I wish EC would clear out some of the vegetation too. It feels much safer down in Albany where it's more open. I realize some of that is because it runs next to a road. But to answer the question, no I don't really feel safe on certain parts of the EC portion.

I'm never going down there again. I'm all for making it better, but I'm not paving the way to safety with myself or my 2 year old. This kind of crap makes me want to move away.
