Burglars Hit Ace Hardware, Suspect Injured

One suspect was arrested after he jumped from a wall and broke both ankles while fleeing, police said.

A group of at least three people burglarized the Grand Lake Ace Hardware store about 12:30 a.m. today, a Piedmont Police Department spokesman said.

Capt. Scott Trudeau said the burglars placed a ladder against the building at 1221 Grand Ave., then broke a window to a second story office and entered the store. Police were notified by the store's alarm service, which indicated people moving about inside the building, he said.

The burglars were near the foot of the ladder when interrupted by police and fled on foot, Trudeau said. One suspect ran a considerable distance trying to escape but broke both ankles when he jumped off a 10-foot-high wall, Trudeau said. The other suspects escaped, he said.

The injured suspect, Dante Shaw, 31, of Oakland, a parolee, was taken to Highland Hospital for treatment and remains hospitalized, Trudeau said.

Police have the suspects' vehicle and a pry bar they believe was used to break the office window. Much of the crime was captured on surveillance video, he said.

My daughter was a camp counselor at this camp last summer. It is a really unique camp. What aRead More great experience for kids. I wish something like this was available when my kids were young. Parents should definitely check it out!!
