Elderly Woman Killed in Weekend Fire

The victim's name was released by the coroner.

A woman who died in a one-alarm fire in East Oakland early Saturday morning was identified by the Alameda County coroner's bureau today as 79-year-old Shirley Garrett.

Garrett, an Oakland resident, died in a structure fire in the 2500 block of Parker Avenue that was reported at about 2:50 a.m. Saturday, according to Oakland fire Battalion Chief Erik Logan.

Garrett was the sole occupant in the one-story home. She was pulled out of the residence but was pronounced dead at the scene, Logan said.

The fire, which engulfed two of the home's four bedrooms, was controlled by about 3:15 a.m. Saturday, he said.

The fire caused an estimated $150,000 in damage to the rooms and their contents, Logan said. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
