Felon Pleads 'Not Guilty' to Murder Charge in May Homicide

A seven-time felon pleaded not guilty today to a charge that he murdered another man by beating and stomping the man in downtown Oakland in May.

Wanell Wilson, a 30-year-old Oakland man, is charged in the death of Darryl Hughes, 26, at about 5:15 a.m. on May 4. Oakland police said the fight started outside the Walgreens drugstore at 14th Street and Broadway and continued across the street into Frank Ogawa Plaza, near Oakland City Hall.

Prosecutors allege that Wilson has seven prior felony convictions, including one for assault with force likely to produce great bodily injury. They say he also has three convictions for possession or sale of drugs and one each for receiving stolen property, being an accessory after the face to a crime and being an ex-felon in possession of a firearm.

Wilson is scheduled to return to court on Sept. 8 for a preliminary hearing.
