Man Jumps in Front of Bus in Apparent Suicide

The incident shut down a section of Grand Avenue during rush hour.

Bay City News – A pedestrian was struck and killed by an AC Transit bus around 6 p.m. Tuesday. Witnesses said the man intentionally leapt in front of the bus on the 3600 block of Grand Avenue near Mandana Boulevard, according to AC Transit spokesman Clarence Johnson.

"It's very tragic, obviously," Johnson said.

Several passengers were on board the bus at the time of the crash, but no other injuries were reported.

Johnson said the bus driver, though not suspected of wrongdoing, would be tested for alcohol or drug use as a matter of policy.

"The driver was going a safe speed on a fairly well-lit street, and doing everything that by all accounts she should have been doing," Johnson said. Collisions with pedestrians are "extremely" traumatic for drivers, he added.
