Medieval Weapons in a 21st Century World

In the news Tuesday: a Marin County man's arrest on suspicion of brandishing his sword. Less lethally, you can often see 16th century-style swordplay in Rockridge.

In San Rafael, a 49-year-old man was arrested Sunday on suspicion of threatening an acquaintance with a sword and demanding money. You can read the full story at San Rafael Patch.

Down in San Diego County, a woman was killed early today (Tuesday) when a cannonball slammed into her home. According to this Associated Press article on sfgate.com,  the woman's husband and another man fired the cannon accidentally.

Meanwhile, East Bay residents can often glimpse medieval and early Renaissance-style swordplay at the Rockridge BART station on College Avenue in Oakland.

The Province of the Mists, the local branch of the Society for Creative Anachronism, hosts sword-fighting practice most Thursdays from 7:30 to 10 p.m. in the "big" parking lot at the BART station. Visitors are welcome to observe.
