PFD Provides Backup During Four-Alarm Fire

Piedmont firefighters were called in for mutual aid Tuesday.

The sent a three-man engine company to fill in at the Alameda County Fire Department's San Lorenzo station Tuesday while county firefighters helped put out a .

Just after 3 p.m., first responders were dispatched to a fire at the Chateau Manor complex in San Leandro that ultimately left four apartments uninhabitable and 13 others damaged. Firefighters from the Hayward, Oakland, and Fremont departments were called in for backup along with the crews from Alameda County and Piedmont.

Piedmont firefighters responded to several routine calls in San Lorenzo while manning the station there for three or four hours, said Captain Warren McLaren. No alarms sounded in Piedmont in the meantime, though one firefighter was recalled to the Piedmont station to provide extra support in case there had been an incident while the one engine company was out of town.

McLaren said the Piedmont department is called upon for mutual aid within the county once or twice a year.
