Oakland police arrested a robbery suspect after closing down streets near the Grand Lake Theater this morning (Wednesday) for a search.

Police reported just before 9 a.m. that a search for a robbery suspect was under way in the 400 block of Crescent Street near Interstate Highway 580.

Around 9:15 a.m., police said they had arrested one suspect and had recovered a stolen car.

Police were advising residents that streets in the area were shut down and that officers were continuing to search the neighborhood for evidence even after the arrest.

Police offered more details of the incident later today:

The robbery suspect was arrested after he led police on a chase that started in West Oakland, a police officer said. Police attempted to pull over a stolen vehicle near 35th Street and Interstate Highway 580 around 8:40 a.m., Oakland police Officer J. Moore said.

The suspect drove away and went onto eastbound I-580. He eventually crashed into the center divide near Grand Avenue and fled on foot, leaving the car behind, Moore said.

He ran through the yard at Lakeview Elementary School at 746 Grand  Ave., which is now an Oakland Unified School District administrative building.

Police arrested him nearby around 9 a.m. in the 400 block of Crescent Street, according to police.

School district spokesman Troy Flint said the building went on  lockdown for about 15 minutes when the robbery suspect ran onto the campus around 9 a.m.

No other suspects are believed to be at large, police said.
