Police Blotter: Bus, Bike and Scooter Accidents, Bicycle Theft

Piedmont police also issued a number of traffic citations and responded to several false alarms last week.

Incidents highlighted in the blotter were recorded in the Piedmont Police Department log from noon on July 29 through noon, Aug. 2. Not all incidents recorded in the log are included here. Information was supplied by the police and does not indicate any convictions.

MONDAY, JULY 29

Lockout — Piedmont officers responded to an Oakland Police Department alert of an auto burglary in progress near Walden Pond Bookstore in the 3300 block of Grand Avenue about 1:40 p.m. They found, instead, two men who had locked their keys inside their car and were using a coat hanger to try to open the car door. Oakland police were advised.

Bus vs. car — A non-injury accident involving an AC Transit bus and a parked vehicle was reported at 6:02 p.m. at Hillside and Oakland avenues.

Arrest — Police arrested one person on suspicion of a Health & Safety Code violation after stopping and searching a pedestrian near the corner of Gilbert and 41st streets in Oakland. (H&S offenses often, but not always, involve illegal drugs.) The arrested person was taken to the Glenn Dyer Detention Facility in Oakland.

TUESDAY, JULY 30

Cyclist arrested — Piedmont police arrested one person after a "welfare check" on a bicycle rider near the corner of Piedmont and Yosemite avenues in Oakland at 8:29 p.m. The cyclist was taken to the Glenn Dyer Detention Facility in Oakland.

WEDNESDAY, JULY 31

Fraud — A Boulevard Way resident reported being the victim of fraud.

Vehicle vs. bike — No one was injured in a vehicle vs. bicycle accident at Linda and Grand avenues at 2:19 p.m., according to police. Neither party wished to make a formal police report.

Bike theft — A bicycle was reported stolen from Hillside Avenue sometime between 2:45 and 6 p.m.

THURSDAY, AUG. 1

Theft — A Mountain Avenue resident reported the theft of two watches. The theft occurred nearly a month earlier.

DUI — One person was arrested near Linda and Lake avenues about 8 p.m. on suspicion of driving while intoxicated.

FRIDAY, AUG. 2

Sidewalk accident — A pedestrian reported being hit by a motorized scooter that was driving on the sidewalk near the corner of Grand and Oakland avenues about 8 am. The pedestrian was not injured, police said. Police were unable to locate the scooter driver, described as a man in his 20s wearing a helmet.
