Police Blotter: Car vs. Bike Accident, Human Traffic Hazard, Possible Gunfire, Spare Tire Thefts

Part of Piedmont's license plate reader system is up and running, adding a new layer of activity patrol officers' jobs.

Incidents highlighted in the blotter were recorded in the Piedmont Police Department log from noon on Nov. 15 through noon, Nov. 18. Not all incidents recorded in the log are included here. Information was supplied by the police and does not indicate any convictions.

FRIDAY, NOV. 15

Stolen license plates and vehicle — One of Piedmont's new license plate readers showed a vehicle equipped with a license plate reported stolen in El Cerrito was traveling westbound on Moraga Avenue. However, officers were unable to locate the vehicle. Another license plate reader "hit" showed a stolen vehicle being driven on Grand Avenue. Oakland police were notified.

Missing wallet — A good citizen turned in a lost wallet found in Oakland.

SATURDAY, NOV. 16

Stolen vehicle — The city's license plate reader system showed a Honda Civic reported stolen in Oakland was being driven on Park Boulevard. 

Bike vs. vehicle — A Piedmont man making a left turn from Highland Avenue onto Wildwood Avenue about 9:40 a.m. failed to see a bicyclist, and the bike struck the sedan's front bumper, police said. The cyclist, a 20=year-old Oakland woman, complained of pain but refused immediate medical attention.

Deceased dog — An animal control officer collected the remains of a deceased Chihuahua wearing a UC Berkley doggie sweater that was found near the corner of Sierra and Sheridan avenues.

ID theft — A Boulevard Way resident reported being the victim of identity theft.

Pedestrian stop — Police contacted a distressed woman near the corner of Rose and Greenbank avenues shortly after 2 p.m. and determined she was a resident of the WoodPark Care assisted living facility in Oakland. A WoodPark employee told police the woman was being evicted and they did not want her returned, according to the police report. The woman was transported to a local hospital.

Disturbance — A caller reported hearing what sounded like a loud argument near the corner of Arbor Drive and Fairview Avenue about 9:40 p.m. Police determined the noise was from a televised football game at a nearby residence.

SUNDAY, NOV. 17

Auto burglaries, thefts from vehicles — A spare tire was reported stolen from an SUV on Highland Avenue. Another spare tire was taken from an SUV parked on Mountain Avenue. A third vehicle was broken into on Kingston Avenue.

Oops — Through the new license plate reader system, police tracked an apparently stolen Honda Civic from Moraga Avenue to the corner of of Magnolia and El Cerrito avenues, where it was stopped. It turned out the driver — the vehicle's owner — owns two Civics. The other one was stolen in San Leandro, but the license plate number entered into the statewide reader system was for the non-stolen car. The driver will call San Leandro police with correct information.

Bicycle theft — Two bikes were stolen from the driveway of a home on Moraga Avenue sometime during the night.

Human traffic hazard — Police contacted a man walking down Moraga Avenue in the street — the westbound traffic lane, near the city corporation yard — about 6:20 p.m. The man refused to come out of traffic to the side of the road and wouldn't take his hands out of his pockets, so he was ultimately restrained briefly, police said. The man was arrested on suspicion of resisting an officer and violating his probation (for a vandalism offense) and was taken to Santa Rita County Jail.

MONDAY, NOV. 18

Possible gunfire — A resident reported hearing a single gunshot and the sound of a vehicle driving away at high speed near the corner of Wyngaard Avenue and Estates Drive just before 5 a.m. Police found tire marks in the street but were unable to locate the vehicle.

Vehicle recovery — A Honda Civic reported stolen in Alameda was found blocking a driveway on Wildwood Avenue.

Auto burglary — Someone smashed a window of a vehicle parked on Olive Avenue. Police said it appeared to be an attempt to steal the vehicle.

Duck rescue — An animal control officer transported an injured duck to the Montclair Veterinary Hospital in Oakland. The duck had been discovered on Wildwood Avenue about 9 a.m.
