Police Blotter: Two Robbed in Separate Incidents

Incidents highlighted in the blotter were recorded in the Piedmont Police Department log, Oct. 10-16. Information was supplied by the police and does not indicate any convictions.

MONDAY, OCT. 10

Car Window Smashed — A resident of the first block of Alta Avenue reported at 11:44 a.m. that the window of her vehicle had been smashed.

Piedmont Resident Suspected of Drunk Driving — An officer monitoring traffic on Grand Avenue pulled a car off onto Arroyo Avenue at 10:56 p.m. after reportedly clocking its speed at about 40 mph in a 25 mph zone. The officer noticed the smell of alcohol on the driver and arrested the 31-year-old woman from Piedmont after she reportedly failed field sobriety tests. Drunk driving charges are pending the results of blood tests.


TUESDAY, OCT. 11

Prowler Reported — Residents of the 100 block of Sandringham Road called police at 12:21 a.m. saying that a man had shone a light through the window of their house and tried the front door before running off towards Wyngaard Avenue.

Young Adults Shooed from Snack Shack — An officer responding to a report of voices at Witter Field's Snack Shack at 1:21 a.m. found a pair of 23- and 24-year-old guys there drinking and playing video games. They were sent off to a friend's house nearby.

Nanny Held Up at Gunpoint — 5:03 p.m. A resident of the first block of Cambrian Street reported that her nanny had been robbed by two men armed with a pistol while she was walking the two kids in her care around 11:30 a.m. Though niether the kids or the nanny were hurt, the robbers made off with the woman's cell phone, gold hoop earrings, and three keys before fleeing on foot southbound on St. James Drive. Piedmont Police are looking for any surveillance footage of the site and checking with Oakland Police regarding any similar incidents in the area.

WEDNESDAY, OCT. 12

Suspected Child Abuse Reported — At 10:27 a.m. police received a report of suspected child abuse from a member of the Piedmont school district's Wellness Center staff.

Leaf Blower Warned — Police issued a warning to someone using a banned gasoline-powered leaf blower on the 200 block of Sheridan Avenue at 2:36 p.m.

THURSDAY, OCT. 13

SUV Driven Off — At 9:28 a.m., a resident of the 700 block of Blair Avenue called to report that their gray BMW X5 four-door SUV had been stolen from in front of the house overnight.


FRIDAY, OCT. 14

Two Vehicle Break-ins on One Block — At 6:45 a.m. a resident of Oakmont Avenue reported that someone had broken the side window of his Volvo and rummaged through it the previous night, though nothing appeared to have been taken. Police received another report at 8:26 a.m. from a resident a few doors down who had discovered that the back passenger window of his Ford Escape had been smashed.

Unwelcome Neighbor Inhabits Van — A resident of the first block of Fairview Avenue reported at 7:04 a.m. that someone had apparently been sleeping for the past five nights in a van with Kansas plates parked in front of his house. Police made contact with the 70-year-old man, who said he was looking for work, and sent him on his way.

Cat Trapped — A cat was reportedly trapped in a house on the first block of Wildwood Avenue at 2:36 p.m. The cat was freed and reunited with its owner about 20 minutes later.

Burglary Attempted — At 3:13 p.m., police responding to a burglar alarm at a house on the 400 block of St. James Circle found that one of the windows in the master bedroom had been smashed and a door unlocked. Nothing appeared to have been taken.

Robber Snatches Necklace — At 4:01 p.m. a woman reported that while she was walking with her daughter along Oakland Avenue a man had stopped her near the intersection of Sunnyside Avenue to ask for directions. While she was looking up the address for him on her iPhone, he yanked the gold necklace from her neck and took off on foot.


SATURDAY, OCT. 15

Stolen Vehicle Recovered — A vehicle stolen out of Oakland was found on the 900 block of Walker Avenue at 9:25 a.m.

Shotguns Surrendered — A resident of the 500 block of Boulevard Way found two old shotguns while cleaning her garage and called police at 9:42 a.m. to have them carted away.

— After receiving a call about a loud party with possible underage drinking at 10:03 p.m., police found about 40 teenagers partying at a house on the 300 block of La Salle Avenue. A 17-year-old Piedmont resident was arrested on suspicion of public drunkenness, resisting arrest, and attempted battery of a police officer while officers worked to disperse the crowd. The father of the teenage girl throwing the party returned home and the house was cleared out by 10:30 p.m.

Mischief Reported Around Witter Field — At 10:45 p.m., police responding to two calls about smashing noises at Witter Field found that a couple of trash cans had been up ended. Less than 20 minutes later, a resident of the first block of Wildwood Avenue reported that a port-o-potty on her property had been tipped over. A report of firecrackers going off at Witter followed at 11:33 p.m. Police were unable to locate any of the hooligans involved in the shenanigans.


SUNDAY, OCT. 16

Yorkie Comes and Goes — A resident of the 300 block of Sheridan Avenue reported at 12:55 p.m. that a yorkie had entered her house through a cat door and then left.

Public Works Alerted to Lilting Street Lamp — A caller from the 100 block of St. James Dr. reported at 8:31 p.m. that a street lamp was lilting periously. Police left a message for public works about it.
