Police Blotter: Parked Car Prevents Garbage Pickup, Burglar Tries Doggie Door

Weekend drinking fueled several DUI arrests and noise complaints.

Incidents highlighted in the blotter were recorded in the Piedmont Police Department log from noon on Aug. 2 through noon, Aug. 5. Not all incidents recorded in the log are included here. Information was supplied by the police and does not indicate any convictions.

FRIDAY, AUG. 2

ID theft — A Ramona Avenue resident reported being the victim of identity theft.

Garbage truck blocked — A Richmond Sanitary truck was unable to navigate past a parked BMW near the corner of Wildwood and Winsor avenues about 2 p.m. Sanitation workers knocked on several doors in an unsuccessful effort to locate the driver. Police said the car was parked legally, but with its wheels turned out — and the street is so narrow that the garbage truck would likely hit it if it tried to pass. A Richmond Sanitary supervisor said workers would attempt to collect trash in the area again on Monday.

Stolen vehicle — A vehicle was reported stolen from Manor Drive. It disappeared sometime during the previous week while the owners were on vacation.

SATURDAY, AUG. 3

DUI arrests — Piedmont police arrested one person on suspicion of driving while intoxicated after administering a field sobriety test near the corner of Pleasant Valley Avenue and Montgomery Street in Oakland about 1:30 a.m. The driver was jailed at the Glenn Dyer Detention Facility in Oakland. A second arrest on suspicion of DUI took place about a half hour later in the 3200 block of Grand Avenue, and again the driver was taken to jail.

Residential burglary attempt— An unidentified caller alerted police to a man running from a home on Mountain Avenue about 3:45 p.m., and a security company also reported the break-in. Police said a doggie door panel had been removed and the home's back door was unlocked. Officers were unable to locate the thief.

SUNDAY, AUG. 4

Noise complaint — Police responded to a report of a loud party on Bonita Avenue that had spilled into the neighborhood at 12:42 a.m. Although initial reports indicated the partygoers were juveniles, police determined they were all 21 years of age or older. An officer detained one "highly intoxicated" young man, then released him to his father's care.

Petty theft — A Hagar Avenue resident reported the theft of an iPad at 5:44 p.m.

MONDAY, AUG. 4

Noise complaint — A caller reported teenagers "drinking, smoking and being loud" in Dracena Quarry Park at 1:26 a.m. At least one citation was issued and two juveniles were handed over to a parent.

Grand theft — Several items were stolen from a garage near Grand and Oakland avenues that had been left open overnight.
