Police Blotter: Stolen Safe, PHS Gun Search

Incidents highlighted in the blotter were recorded in the Piedmont Police Department log June 4-11. Information was supplied by the police and does not indicate any convictions

MONDAY, JUNE 4

Belligerent juvenile — A juvenile whom police described as "belligerent" tried to interfere with a police officer's traffic stop near the corner of Oakland and Highland avenues about 2:30 p.m. He was taken into custody briefly, then released to his parents.

Fallen tree —A caller reported a fallen tree in the 300 block of Wildwood Avenue at 10:35 a.m. The city's Public Works Department was notified. A fallen branch from a street tree was reported on the 300 block of Magnolia Avenue at 6:01 p.m. Again, Public Works was notified.

Home burglary — Burglars took a portable safe containing a handgun and ammunition during a break-in at a home in the first block of Sandringham Road sometime after 7:45 a.m. Police said the victim arrived home about 3:50 p.m. and noticed several things out of place: a dish drainer moved, two knives on a kitchen counter, a window unlocked. Police said the burglars apparently bypassed a security system by entering and exiting through windows. The thieves made a thorough search and took computers and video equipment in addition to the safe, police said. Officers were able to obtain fingerprints from the scene, and neighbors reported seeing an SUV and/or a small pickup truck picked in the victim's driveway in the morning.

Car theft follows burglary — Car keys were among the items stolen from a home in the 1500 block of Grand Avenue on June 1, and the victim's Volvo sedan was discovered to be missing the evening of June 4. The car had been parked on Oakland Avenue.

Domestic violence — A Piedmont man was jailed briefly shortly after 10 p.m. but no charges have been filed in connection with the domestic violence incident, police said. They said the victim did not suffer significant injuries.

TUESDAY, JUNE 5

Bus driver dispute — An argument between two bus drivers, one waiting to take students on a field trip and the other to deliver students to Beach School's Emeryville site, escalated to what police called a "physical altercation" outside Havens Elementary School. One driver was cited and released. You may read a detailed account in this Inside Bay Area article.

Stolen car — A limited-edition Saab convertible was reported stolen from the 300 block of Wildwood Avenue. BART police found the vehicle two days later and released it to the owner.

School thefts — Cash and several cell phones were reported as stolen from students at Piedmont Middle School.

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 6

Vandalism at PHS — Vandals placed garbage cans on the roof, threw food and toilet paper at walls and poured cement in front of several doors at Piedmont High School sometime between midnight and 7:45 a.m.

THURSDAY, JUNE 7

Gun search at PHS — Police searched lockers at Piedmont High School around lunch time after rumors and text messages began flying among students that a student brought a gun to school. No gun was found at PHS or the student's home, police said.

Theft — Cash and jewelry were reported missing from a home in the 100 block of Estates Drive.

FRIDAY, JUNE 8

Robbery on Piedmont Avenue — A PPD officer responded to an armed robbery reported at the 7-Eleven store at 4193 Piedmont Ave., Oakland. Police were unable to locate the robber, who was described as wearing black jeans and a black hoodie and carrying a black handgun.

SUNDAY, JUNE 10

Driving while intoxicated — A 31-year-old Oakland woman was arrested on suspicion of DUI after a traffic stop by a PPD officer near the corner of Piedmont and Monte Vista avenues in Oakland about 12:45 a.m.

Knocking while intoxicated — A 20-year-old San Leandro woman was arrested on suspicion of being intoxicated in public after she left a nearby party and pounded on the back door of a home in the first block of Sotelo Avenue abotu 3:30 a.m. The woman thought if was the home of a friend, police said. It wasn't.

Blood-stained clothing — Police conducted an extensive search of an area near Crocker Park after a local resident reported finding a pair of child-sized, blood-stained yellow shorts shortly after 7 p.m. Officers found a sock, also blood-stained, but did not locate any victim.

MONDAY, JUNE 11

Drug-related arrest — A 26-year-old Oakland man was arrested on suspicion of possession of marijuana for sale after a PPD officer searched a vehicle parked near the corner of Vernon Street and Monte Vista Avenue in Oakland. The man had been sleeping in the vehicle and and the officer smelled the odor of burning marijuana, according to police reports.
