Purse snatches have increased in District 3, and several victims have been injured as a result of resisting their assailants, the Oakland Police Department reported in a bulletin Wednesday.

The OPD's District 3 stretches from Lakeshore Avenue to a few blocks beyond Fruitvale Avenue, and from the hills around Joaquin Miller Park to the shoreline opposite Alameda.

"Personal is safety is always a priority," the bulletin cautions. "Property can be replaced."

Police offered the following tips to lessen your chances of being the victim of a robber or thief:

—Always be aware of your surroundings. Don’t be distracted by cell phones and electronic devices.

—Stay in well-lit, populated areas.

—Stay alert and keep your shopping bags nearby — don’t leave bags unattended.

—Do not leave packages, shopping bags or other items of value visible in your vehicle.

—Avoid showing large amounts of cash when making purchases.

—Be especially alert when entering and exiting your vehicle.

—Remember to lock your car door after entering your vehicle.

—Let people know when you intend to arrive at your destination, so they can keep an eye out for you.

—Be alert to your surroundings, and visually mindful of suspect description, clothing, vehicles, and anything else that can help police.

—If someone or something looks suspicious call the police on OPD’s non-emergency number 777-3333.
