Small Grass Fire at Claremont Country Club

The fire burned an area on the club's back driving range, bordering Mountain View Cemetery.

Bay City News Service—Fire crews put out a grass fire at a golf course in the Oakland Hills Tuesday afternoon, an Oakland fire dispatcher said.

The "very, very small" grass fire was reported at 1:38 p.m. in the 5200 block of Broadway Terrace, the dispatcher said. It was contained a short time later. No one was injured in the fire.

The small blaze broke out on the Claremont Country Club's back driving range, which borders the Mountain View Cemetery, said Louis Alcorn, who works at the club's golf shop.

Alcorn said he was out playing on the green when he smelled smoke. He said that when he discovered the fire, it was no bigger than about a quarter-acre but it was in a very dry area. The blaze did not damage any buildings, he said.
