Woman Attacked During Robbery Attempt on Grand Avenue

At least one assailant hit the victim while trying to grab her purse, police said.

An Oakland woman was attacked during a robbery attempt on Grand Avenue near  the corner of Sunnyside Avenue on Friday night, according to a Piedmont Police Department spokesman.

Capt. Scott Wyatt said police first learned of the incident when a witness called shortly after 9:30 pm. on June 28 to report seeing trying to take a woman's purse and hitting the victim.

Patrol officers who responded to the report were not able to locate either the woman or her assailants, he said.

The victim herself phoned Piedmont police about an hour later but did not want to make a formal report, Wyatt said.

The woman said she was walking on Grand Avenue when a tall white male adult tried to grab her bag and began hitting her while pulling on her purse, Wyatt said.

The victim said she believes other people with the man were also striking her, he said.

The assailants fled without the victim's purse, he said.
