Woman Convicted in Piedmont Embezzlement Faces New Charges

A woman who served a jail term last year for embezzling from her Piedmont employer is now a suspect in several similar cases in Sonoma County, police say.

An administrative assistant who served several months in jail in 2011 for embezzling nearly $100,000 from her Piedmont employer has been arrested by Sonoma County authorities in connection with similar cases there, according to Piedmont Police Department Detective George Phifer.

Denise Hankins, 42, of Oakley is in custody in Sonoma County, where she is a suspect in several cases of identity theft, fraud and burglary, Phifer said.

Video evidence collected by the Piedmont Police Department may also tie Hankins to incidents in which Contra Costa County residents were defrauded, he said.

Hankins accepted a plea deal and served about eight months in jail after she was arrested on suspicion of defrauding a Piedmont man last year, Phifer said. She worked as an administrative or personal assistant to the Piedmont victim at his home office on Lexford Road, Phifer said.
