Chance of Rain Boosted to 50% in Bay Area

The chances of rain this week got a boost today when the National Weather Service raised the likelihood to 50 percent by late Wednesday.

The earlier "slight chance" of rain forecast for the Bay Area by Thursday has been boosted to 50 percent by Wednesday night, according the latest forecast from the National Weather Service.

However, those hoping for dent in the drought will be disappointed, the weather agency said today, Monday.

"This will not make a change to our drought status as this is not expected to be a significant rainfall," said agency meteorologist Logan Johnson. This January is expected to be among the driest ever recorded, the weather service said.

If it does rain, watch out for hazardous driving conditions.

"Some slick roadways are expected as the rain comes down given the lack of rainfall!" Johnson said in an email.

The best chances of rain will be between Wednesday afternoon and Thursday, according to the weather service.

If rain occurs, the amounts are expected to be relatively small. The weather service provided these predictions:

  • North of SF Bay: 0.50 inch or less except up to 0.75 inch in high spots in coastal mountains.
  • SF Bay Area and to the South: 0.25 inches or less except up to 0.50 inches in high spots in Santa Cruz and Santa Lucia Mountains.
  • Far southern areas (south of Monterey Bay) will be 0.10 inches or less.
There's a 30 percent chance of rain during the day Thursday, and a "low chance" that the North Bay could get less than a tenth of an inch of rain as early as tonight, Monday, the agency said.
