Piedmont Aims For a Summer Reopening of Tea House

Anchoring of deck, installation of can lights remain on the project list.

The city is hoping to reopen a community gem, the in Piedmont Park, by mid-summer with a dedication ceremony for the community.

The tea house has received a thorough renovation, including new flooring, roof and shoji doors, culminating in the replacement of its deck. The old oak deck was lifted off its piers by the growth of redwood trees interspersed in the deck, Mark Feldkamp, Piedmont’s parks and project manager, told the Parks Commission last week.

The new deck will be anchored by 30 piers, some as deep as seven feet. “It will take a lot of effort to get this thing to move,” said Feldkamp.

The completion time will depend on how much rock is encountered in drilling for the piers.

“I’d love to have it open by July 4 but I’m not sure,” said Feldkamp.

The railing will be stained ebony to match the benches: “simple and elegant,” said Feldkamp.

The benches will be sold to donors for $5,000 each.

The final touch will be installation of low-voltage can lights on the branches of an oak to “illuminate the right sections of the new decking,” said Feldkamp. There will be hooks for Japanese lanterns to hang from the eaves.

The Piedmont Beautification Foundation is financing the “moonlight” lighting and other renovations.
