Here's a rundown on the price increases:

  • Letters additional ounces — unchanged at 20 cents
  • Letters to all international destinations (1 oz.) — $1.10
  • Postcards — 1-cent increase to 33 cents

The USPS will also introduce a new First-Class Mail Global Forever Stamp. The stamp allows people to mail letters anywhere in the world for $1.10.

In addition, there will be several new shipping services products will be available in January. Free tracking will be offered to all competitive packages, including retail Priority Mail and Parcel Post.

I learned today that the post office has two rate standards it follows. For services where it has a monopoly, like home delivery of letter mail, it can only raise prices by a percentage determine by the cost of living. For competitive services, like package delivery (competes with UPS and FedEx), there are no limits. So letter mail is still a really good deal, and some of the package rates, in particular the regional rate boxes (post office provides the packaging FREE and picks up FREE), are exceptional. But . . . international rates went up through the roof (40% and more in some cases), and if you ship to Mexico you'll find Mexico is no longer grouped with Canada but with all other countries = price doubling in some cases.
Using Click 'n Ship online at usps.com will save you 10% and is very convenient. In many cases it lets you avoid the 13 oz homeland-security rule of having to take heavier mail to the post office.

Our home and office USPO service has been and remains excellent. Far increases appear acceptable. USPO indispensable!
