Rec Commission Hearing on Beach Playfield

The Recreation Commission will revisit the question of use of the playfield by organized groups during the first of two public hearings on Wednesday, July 18. One option may be establishing two fields, with one reserved for children and families.

From a City of Piedmont announcement:

Beach Playfield Neighborhood and Community

Notice is hereby given that the Piedmont Recreation Commission will hold public hearings on Wednesday, July 18 and on Wednesday, September 19, 2012. These hearings will be held at 7:30 pm in the City Council Chambers, 120 Vista Avenue, Piedmont, California.

The purpose of these hearings is for the Commission to hear testimony regarding certain use patterns at Beach Playfield. Feedback and comments from the neighborhood are particularly encouraged.

In July and September, 2007, the Recreation Commission held public hearings and ultimately recommended that certain modifications be made to the Beach Playfield Use Restrictions. In February 2008, the City Council approved these modifications that included new rules limiting adult use of the playfield by groups of 12 or more persons 21 years of age or older concurrently participating in the same activity (ies) or game (s) including substitutes or alternatives but excluding coaches or spectators.

The Recreation Commission also held a public hearing on this matter in November, 2010 and continued consideration in 2011. No decision on any rule changes or modifications were made pending the establishment of a park monitor program to document certain use patterns. There has been some neighborhood concern expressed including matters of safety and field access by children and families on weekends after organized use by the Piedmont Soccer Club/Baseball-Softball groups.

The Commission will be considering these matters at these July 18 and September 19 hearings. Consideration will include a concept to implement a rule establishing two equally sized fields in the east to west orientation (Linda Avenue toward Howard Avenue) with one of the fields being designated for children and families only.

Public testimony and comment at these hearings is encouraged. Written comments should be directed to Dick Hunt, Chairman, Piedmont Recreation Commission, 358 Hillside Avenue, Piedmont, CA 94611 or by email to:
mdelventhal@ci.piedmont.ca.us.

These hearing will be televised live on the City of Piedmont government access station KCOM Channel 27 and will also be available through streaming video on the City Web Site: http://www.ci.piedmont.ca.us under “on-line video."

For further information, contact Recreation Director Mark Delventhal at 420-3073.
