Bird Callers Squawk Their Stuff on Letterman

The winner's of the 46th annual Piedmont High School bird calling contest performed on The Late Show Wednesday.

David Letterman, host of The Late Show on CBS, got a few laughs out of Piedmont High School's champion bird callers on his show Wednesday night.

It's a long-standing tradition for the winners of the annual Leonard J. Waxdeck Bird Calling Contest to appear on The Late Show to perform their bird impressions and show off their knowledge of ornithology.

Letterman said he was only pretending to listen while PHS senior Zach Piser described the call of the wood stork, which took in the contest May 13. Piser took the joke in stride, shrugging his shoulders, and going on to lead his teammates Andrew Moorhead and Tialli Moya-Smith in a rousing rendition of the croaks and sirens of the wood stork's two-part song.

The host needled winners August Grahn, Jeremy Kruger and Andrew Gage for waiting until this year to enter the contest for the first time, although all you have to do to qualify is sign up. And instead of showing a picture of the beautiful American Coot, which won Caitlin Baldridge, Ausitn Kelley, and Theo Quayle this year's , Letterman put up an unflattering picture of himself with a beard.
