Gimme a Break: Survey Looks at School Vacations

Associated Parent Clubs of Piedmont representatives present results to school board.

A majority of Piedmont school district respondents to an online calendar survey are interested in a shorter summer break with the prospect of adding a one-week vacation or vacations during the school year.

Representatives of the Associated Parent Clubs of Piedmont, which conducted the survey, presented the results to the Piedmont school board Wednesday night.

Of those parents with an opinion, about 60 percent preferred a shorter summer break combined with more frequent one-week vacations, Laura Katter of the APCP explained.

On a more specific question, when presented with a preference, 54 percent of parents opted for a one-week break in February over a full-week break at Thanksgiving time.

In general, 75 percent of parents said they were satisfied with the current calendar, according to the APCP survey.

Mary Ireland of APCP said the clubs plan to organize a survey of high school students on school calendar questions. Helping with the presentation was Michael Lukaszewski of ACPC.

The school board commended the ACPC work on the surveys.

“It’s an informative tool for helping people understand the complexities of developing the calendar,” said board member June Monach.
