Rich Kitchens Reflects on 34 Years at PHS

The Piedmont High School principal will retire after more than three decades at the school. His jobs have ranged from rookie social studies teacher to a five-year stint as assistant principal before he took over the top spot at PHS.

Then-Piedmont High School principal to Rich Kithens at an employment interview in 1979: "Get a new suit of clothes and a haircut. You can have the job.”

Kitchens, who began at PHS as a social studies teacher in 1979 and became principal in 2011, will retire at the end of the school year.

He talked with student journalist Matt Leong of The Piedmont Hghlander about more than three decades of memories and about his plans for retirement (hint: practicing law and entering chili cookoffs are on the agenda).
