School Board Leadership Remains Unchanged

Roy Tolles stays on as president, Rick Raushenbush as vice president.

Piedmont's school board unanimously reelected Roy Tolles as president, Rick Raushenbush as vice president, and Superintendent Connie Hubbard as secretary Wednesday.

In nominating Tolles to be president again, school board members Ray Gadbois and June Monach, who both served as president previously, cited the advantages of continuity.

"As someone who served [as president] for two consecutive years, I found that there can be real benefits," Monach said. "By the second year I had a better stride."

It's the job of the board president to put together agendas in consultation with the superintendent and to preside over meetings. Monach said it takes a while to establish relationships with the district administration and board members to keep everything running smoothly.

In accepting the nomination, Tolles concurred.

"It took me six months to figure out how to a call a vote," he said. "Now I'm ready, have the summer to reflect on the year coming up, and start laying out strategies for what needs to be done going forward."

Gadbois complimented Tolles, who is in the middle of his second term, for his efforts to visit Piedmont's school sites and encouraging his fellow board members to do the same.

Monach gave kudos to Raushenbush for demonstrating "impressive critical thinking skills" during board deliberations and for his "decisiveness" in presenting his arguments after considering the tradeoffs involved in a given issue.

Raushenbush's terms expires in February, 2012, but Monach hoped he would run for reelection.

"After Roy serves … I envision you as president," she said.

The renewed leadership will be place at least until February when a new school board is .
