Restaurant Watch: Crab Feed, Cookbook Signing, Openings

Open now: Box and Bells on College. Opening next week: Penrose & Sons on Grand. Closing: Mezze on Lakeshore. Plus meet vegetarian cookbook author Mollie Katzen.

Meet the East Bay's renowned vegetarian cookbook author Mollie Katzen and have her sign your copy of her newest book, The Heart of the Plate: Vegetarian Recipes for a New Generation, Sunday, Nov. 10, from 1 to 3 p.m. at The Pasta Shop, in Market Hall, 5655 College Ave., Oakland. Openings and closings:
Penrose & Sons Fine Meats & Spirits (from the folks who brought you Boot and Shoe Service) is scheduled to open at last on Grand Avenue, Oakland, on Nov. 15. On Lakeshore Avenue, Mezze has been sold and the new Shakewell Bar & Kitchen will be opening in that space (3407 Lakeshore). And back in Rockridge, Commis owner-chef James Shyabout's Box and Bells is now open.

Homestead
at 4029 Piedmont Ave., Oakland will offer a crab feed on Wednesday, Nov. 27, from 3 to 9 p.m. This prix fixe family-style supper is designed for those who love crab and don't want to cook the day before Thanksgiving. The cost will be $38 per person, with drinks available a la carte. The menu will include grilled Dungeness crab in the shell (half per guest, with a second half available at a supplemental price of $20), winter greens salad, roasted potatoes and Firebrand artisan bread, plus pear sorbet with gingersnaps for dessert. For more information or for reservations, which can also be made via www.urbanspoon.com, call (510) 420-6962.
