Oakland Strokes Rowers Win Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals at 2013 Youth Nationals

The winning boats included several crew members from Piedmont High School.

Over 365 young crews from 153 youth rowing clubs representing 30 states came together on June 7th at the US Rowing race venue in Oakridge, Tennessee, to compete for three days of qualifying heats and finals. They all had hopes of winning a national championship in one of the 18 events featuring both sweep and sculling boats.

By the close of racing on Sunday, Oakland Strokes Lightweight Womens 8+ had won gold, Varsity Mens 8+ had won silver, and Varsity Womens 8+ had won bronze at the US Rowing Youth Nationals.

Strokes sent a total of four boats to Youth Nationals, and three reached the podium in their races, for one of the strongest performances in the club’s history.  

The Lightweight women led the charge on Sunday morning with a decisive first place victory over second place Wayland-Weston and third place PNRA. The Lightweight boat was crewed by Alia Shafi (Acalanes HS), Marie Johnson (Miramonte HS), Elizabeth Pate (Miramonte HS), Alana Anderson (Piedmont HS), Gabriela Pascual-Mead (St. Mary’s HS), Madelynn Prendergast (Head Royce School), Indigo Catton (Campolindo HS), Grace Benson (Bishop O’Doud HS), and coxswain Caroline Carper (Alameda HS).

The Varsity Women followed with a hard-fought bronze, getting nosed out by cross bay arch rival Marin Rowing and midwest club Cincinnati Junior.  The Varsity Women’s boat was crewed by Alia Shafi (Acalanes HS), Marie Johnson (Miramonte HS), Elizabeth Pate (Miramonte HS), Laura Rosas (Miramonte HS), Tara Bozzini (Acalanes HS), Ellen Pate (Miramonte HS), Alia Shafi (Acalanes HS), Elizabeth Elmgren (Oakland Tech HS), Lauren Noga (Head Royce School), and coxswain Amanda Rutherford (Piedmont HS).

The Varsity Men put an exclamation point on the day with a silver medal, losing to Sarasota Crew, but finally beating third place Marin Rowing for the first time this season.  The Varsity Men’s boat was crewed by Erik Johnson (Miramonte HS), Josef Starc (Oakland Tech HS), Tanner Malone (Albany HS), Luke O’Brien (De LaSalle HS), Sean-Patrick Sullivan (De LaSalle HS), Marshall Krock (Monte Vista HS), Cubby Parker (Bentley HS), Viggo Hoite (Berkeley HS), and coxswain Karmi Chan (Miramonte HS).

The Lightweight Men closed out their season with a hard fought fourth place finish in their C Final.  The Lightweight Men’s boat was crewed by Tucker Johnson (Piedmont HS), Danny Hogan (De LaSalle HS), Brian Wharton (Acalanes HS), Ben Peterson (Campolindo HS), Elias Morley (Bentley HS), Michael Landheer (Piedmont HS), Alec Petty (Piedmont HS), Allan Hosler (Piedmont HS),  Hannah Christopher (Miramonte HS).
